Volunteer with MRS
The tremendous growth and success of MRS is due to the vitality, drive and vision of our many member volunteers. MRS is member-led and member-driven, and whether you have been involved for only a few days or for many years, we are always eager to welcome energetic and enthusiastic new volunteers of any career level with varying skills and interests.
Here at Volunteer Central you will find many opportunities—both short- and long term—that align with your interests, areas of expertise and schedule. Volunteer opportunities are available exclusively to MRS members. Not a member yet? Join today!
Operating Committees
MRS operating committees form the operational heart of the society and are made up of energized volunteers who wish to help drive forward specific aspects of the society. If you're interested in volunteering on a committee, please complete the Volunteer Profile Form to express your interests.
Diversifying Materials Special Interest Groups
MRS Special Interest Groups (SIGs) are communities within the Society with a shared interest in networking, community building, and passion for advancing the materials community. SIG members cooperate to support members’ careers and stimulate improvements in the materials community by informing each other, advising the Society, and, potentially, organizing activities or programs.

Propose a Symposium Topic
MRS Meetings serve as an international stage for the examination and dissemination of current and emerging materials research. At the heart of the meetings portfolio are the Spring and Fall Meetings.
Publish with MRS
Publishing with MRS connects your research with a global audience, advancing the field of materials science. Benefit from high visibility and the opportunity to contribute to leading journals in the field.
Student Opportunities at MRS Meetings
MRS Meetings offer opportunities for graduate students and post-docs to work as reporters, bloggers, or symposium assistants. These positions provide valuable networking and professional development with researchers from around the globe.
MRS volunteers are expected to embody the highest standards of professional behavior and ethics reflected in the MRS Professional Behavior and Ethics Policy and the MRS Volunteer Behavior Policy.
If you are interested in joining a MRS operating committee, please note that volunteer rosters are reviewed once a year, typically December/January. Shortly thereafter, an MRS Member Engagement staff person will contact you if an opportunity that fits your interests becomes available. Micro-volunteering opportunities appear unscheduled throughout the year and a call for volunteers will be issued for those positions and will be posted on our Job Board under Volunteer Opportunities.
